Little Country, Big Talk: Science Communication in Ireland

Varshney, Vinod

Abstract

The title Little Country, Big Talk is evocative. Ireland is a little country, having a tiny population of just 4.64 million, a quarter of New Delhi’s; but its contribution to the global science qualitywise is ‘big’. From the yardstick of patents, its resident scientists acquired 357 patents in 2015 compared to India’s 822, a country which is the third largest economy on purchasing power parity parameter of rupee, and houses the second largest population in the world. And look at the Global Innovation Index: Ireland ranked 10th among the 130 countries that were surveyed in 2017 compared to India’s 60th.
